Why do people call you Nacho?
Nacho is the nick name for Ignacio.
At
Spanish speaking countries, about 350 million people in the world, that is the way Ignacios
are called.
In the same way that people named William are called Bill,
people name Ignacio are called Nacho.
Ok, I got that.
Then, why tortilla chips are called nachos?
I had a theory, which I found out to be in the right direction.
Tortilla chips have existed in Mexico for quite a while; they have always been good to dip into refried
beans or salsa, as a substitute for a spoon. We also know that there are
several Mexicans living in US.
Therefore chances are that a Nacho (capital N) once
served or prepared totopos for his friends or at a restaurant and
after that they started calling them nachos, lower case n. (This story
had been officially recorded at Oxford
dictionary and
Wikipedia.)
In the same way that bill is different from Bill, nacho is different from Nacho.
